Talking About Family Business in Japan

May 2017

Professor Justin Craig, Co-Director of Kellogg's Center for Family Enterprises was a featured speaker in Tokyo at the Family Business Leadership Conference sponsored by Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory LLC, Deloitte Tohmatsu Tax Co. and Kellogg Club of Japan on April 21, 2017. The program was attended by 130 people, including 100 members of Japanese business-owning families. The talk's topic, "Leading a Family Business" was based on a book co-authored by Professor Craig, Leading a Family Business: Best Practices for Long-Term Stewardship, due out this summer.

His session was followed by a panel of Kellogg and Northwestern University Alumni. Along with a moderator, panelists illuminated aspects of the content that were particularly meaningful and relevant to Japanese family enterprises.

Members of the panel were: Mr. Kenichi Nakamuta (Iwataya Department Store, Owner, Kellogg MBA'73) Dr. Teruaki Aoki (Sony, Northwestern PhD'70) Professor Akihiro Okumura (Professor Emeritus, Keiko University, Kellogg, MBA'75).

Professor Craig reflected, "Japanese family enterprises are recognized for their longevity. Visiting with Kellogg alumni and others from family businesses was a mutually beneficial learning experience. I look forward to continue to strengthening these rich and vitally important relationships."
